Local New Orleans roofer inspecting storm damage on a Gentilly home roof

What to Do When Your Roof Insurance Claim Is Denied in Greater New Orleans

By Clear Home Team · May 22, 2026

Insurance just denied your roof claim. That letter hits hard, especially after a hurricane or hailstorm rolls through Greater New Orleans. You file thinking the policy will cover the damage, then the adjuster says wear and tear, improper maintenance, or not enough hail hits. Now what?

I’ve been a licensed roofer here for over twenty years. Our crew has walked hundreds of roofs from the West Bank to the North Shore after storms like Ida and Zeta. We’ve helped more than a thousand Louisiana families get their claims paid. A denial is not always the end of the road.

Why roof claims get denied in Louisiana

Louisiana carriers look for any reason to limit payouts after a big storm. The most common reasons we see are:

  • They claim the damage is from wear and tear instead of wind or hail.
  • The adjuster misses hidden damage to the decking or underlayment.
  • The policy has a large deductible or percentage-based wind/hail exclusion.
  • They say the roof was already leaking before the storm.

In Greater New Orleans our roofs take a beating from salt air, heavy rain, and sudden high winds. Asphalt shingles can look fine from the street but have cracked sealant and granule loss that carriers try to call normal aging.

A quick look from the curb is not enough. We climb up and check every slope, every valley, every flashing detail.

First steps after you receive the denial letter

Don’t throw the letter in a drawer. You usually have a limited window to respond. In Louisiana most policies give you one year from the date of loss to file suit, but appeal deadlines inside the carrier’s process are often much shorter.

Read the denial letter twice. Note exactly what language they used. Take dated photos of the entire roof and the interior water stains. Write down dates and times of any storms that could have caused the damage.

Call the insurance company and ask for a re-inspection. Be polite but firm. Tell them you have new information or photos. Many times a second adjuster will spot what the first one missed.

Can you appeal a roof insurance denial?

Yes. Louisiana law gives you the right to appeal. Start by sending a written request for reconsideration. Include any photos, weather reports from the National Weather Service, and a simple letter explaining why you believe the damage was caused by a covered peril.

Keep every email and letter. Create a folder on your phone so everything is in one place. Carriers sometimes reverse their decision when they see you have your paperwork together.

If the second look still comes back denied, you have further options. Some policies allow an appraisal process where each side picks an appraiser and they agree on an umpire. This can be faster than going to court.

Should you hire a public adjuster?

A public adjuster works for you, not the insurance company. They know the policy language and how to document storm damage. In Greater New Orleans we’ve seen good public adjusters help homeowners collect thousands more than the original offer.

They charge a percentage of what they recover, usually between 8 and 15 percent. That comes out of the settlement, not your pocket up front. Make sure the adjuster is licensed in Louisiana and has local storm experience.

We don’t sell public adjusting services. Our job is the roof. But we’ve worked alongside many good adjusters on claims from Lakeview to Algiers. If your denial looks complicated, a licensed public adjuster can level the playing field.

How long do you have to appeal in Louisiana?

Most homeowner policies in our state require that you give written notice of the claim within one year of the date of loss. Some policies are stricter. Check your declarations page.

Once the claim is denied, the appeal clock starts. Many carriers want a response inside 30 to 60 days. After that you may need to hire an attorney or file a bad-faith claim under Louisiana Revised Statute 22:1892 and 22:1973.

The important thing is to act quickly. Every week that passes makes it harder to prove the damage came from the recent storm instead of older wear.

How a local roofing contractor can help

We look at the roof the same way the insurance engineer does, except we do it with twenty years of walking Louisiana roofs. Our HAAG-certified inspectors know exactly what wind damage, hail bruising, and hidden deck rot look like after a Gulf Coast storm.

When we prepare a supplement or re-inspection package, we include clear photos, elevation drawings if needed, and a detailed scope of repair. Carriers respect reports that are organized and specific.

We handle both insurance work and straight cash jobs. If the carrier still refuses to pay after a fair review, we can give you a written cash price so you can decide what to do next. No pressure either way.

Our same crew starts and finishes every job. We pull the permits, we install the underlayment that meets the latest IBHS FORTIFIED standards, and we make sure the roof will stand up to the next hurricane season.

What to look for when choosing help after a denial

Not every roofer or public adjuster is the same. Here are a few practical things to check:

  • Louisiana contractor license in good standing.
  • References from recent storm claims in Jefferson, Orleans, or St. Tammany Parish.
  • Proof of insurance and bonding.
  • Clear explanation of their process without promising a full replacement before they see the roof.
  • Written estimate within 24 hours of the inspection.

Ask them how many denied claims they have helped overturn in the last two years. The answer tells you a lot.

Protecting your home while you fight the claim

Don’t leave a damaged roof open to the next rain. Even a tarp properly installed can buy you time. We can put on a secure tarp and document the temporary repair for your claim file.

While you wait on the appeal, keep the interior dry. Run dehumidifiers if you have water stains on ceilings. Take more photos every time it rains. These records help your case if you need to show additional damage caused by the insurance delay.

Moving forward with confidence

A denial feels like a dead end, but many claims in Greater New Orleans get paid after the first no. The difference usually comes down to better documentation, a second inspection, and someone who knows how our local weather affects roofs.

We’ve stood on thousands of roofs from Chalmette to Covington. We know what the insurance folks look for and what they often miss. If your claim has been denied, give us a call. We’ll inspect the roof, explain what we see in plain English, and help you build the strongest possible next step.

Whether that means supporting your appeal, working with your public adjuster, or giving you a cash option, our goal is to get your home protected before the next storm season rolls in off the Gulf.

Getting a fair shake from your insurance company shouldn’t be a second job. Let us handle the roof side while you get back to normal life in our neighborhood.
